a friend recently asked me if I knew anything about
" nunca muerte " , an allegedly medicinal plant.
I had never heard of such a thing, nor did a search yield any results.
she told me that on her trip through south america, she had been given a single
leaf of it by (in her words) "a santeria medicine woman" and told that is was called
nunca muerte, meaning -never dead- .
nearly two weeks later she returned home and put the leaf in a pot and watered it
and it became a whole new plant.
the plant in the included picture is what happened when she kept another leaf in
shallow water for a month.
she was told nothing more than that it was "good medicine" and to eat it or make tea,
and got the impression it was highly regarded.
do you know what this plant might be?

Re: "nunca muerte" santeria medicinal plant identification?
Fri, October 19, 2007 - 7:29 AMthat would make sense, "never-dead" / "always live"
searching for "siempre vivo" I find that it is also called
"katakataka" and latin name "kalanchoe pinnaia"
but searches for the latin name yeilded little results
and I still cannot find a pic.
also I found that it supposedly should not be taken internally.
thanks Jason for the lead. -

Sat, October 20, 2007 - 4:51 AMYou could also search for Kalanchoe crenata as another possibility. Some pictures are available.

Re: "nunca muerte" santeria medicinal plant identification?
Sat, October 20, 2007 - 8:11 AMthe siempre vivo seemed right because of the name similarity and the pics
are very similar but she says there is no red/purple and neither this, nor the plant
it came from has / was flowering.
I thought maybe this could be because it may not
have recently had ideal conditions.
they would seem obviously related because of their similar appearance,
behavior and heartyness.
maybe (pure speculation) it is called -never dead- to differentiate between
it and -always living- while still obviously reflecting their similarities.?
Alberta-
do you know the scientific name for the prodigosa? a search yielded no real results.
and do you know if it is used in similar ways?
thanks for your knowledge!

Con La Benidcon de todos:
De nuevo A Dupe.....
Orunmila agbewa o !
Y se Hab;a "IFA del Bueno"!
As an aleyo with elekes, angle de garda, and los gurreros ...knocking at the door next ( i.e .awofakan & etc etc ) I wanna thank you all here!!!
Having spent alot of time , energy and effort in praise and worship , besides study and reasearch.......coupled with the fact that I have been so blessed to have associated with many many lovely teachers over an extended time since a boy. I'd just like to take this privilage and opportuntiy to hazzard to suggest a book if i may ! Being an retired ex Chef with a gold seal on my journeymans certification.....I've been able to identify a whole heck of alot of herbalism , graduated from George Brown College in the late 80's, and have seen and done alot with greens, and those things called herbs and suchlike.
Anyone who is the least bit into this n that and the other things in the these dimensions of EWE, can benifit from a common sense co relation between the anthorpology of food and eating in man, mythos and magic.....aND one GREAT BOOK IN PARTICULAR!!!!
nO i DONT RECOMMNED JUST THE HERB BOOK!!!
MAy yah try to dig up and find on a used good ol bookstore site on the web.....try try try to find!
EWE le verbe et lepouvoir de plantes chez les Yoruba.
by Pierre F. Verger
translated as-Ewe- The Use of Plants in Yoruba Society: ISBN # 85-7164-516-0.
Its very hard to find but worth the time energy and money to do it to it.
To do it to it one needs of course to be able to operate in a Regla De OCha kitchen , and know what is being asked of your to do by the initates and heads of the household of faith! ( i.e.Alashe!! he eeehee!).....and that foundation is built upon an apprenticeship , one on one , guidance and instructions from your elders therein....NOT from any book or web site.
Cause when the Babalawo puts a series of herbs in a jar under your nose the only way your gonna know what he heck it is ......ISNT from reading a book or finding it on the internet or library!!!!! Im not trying to contradict my self or give a lecture to the Laity and Priesthood.....but i have found over many many years involved in bookstore shopping and hanging out......that there are FEW good books on EWE!!!
Most of the books are written by scholars or those whom have or trying to get a PhD!!!!!
The best people to ask are like the ones to be found in this blog.
MAny of the other blogs leave the people in a state of osogbo and ibi over and over.
Again and again.....I find EXPERINCE coupled with knowledge, understanding and wisdom is the key.
The wortcunning, formula of W.A.F.R. I. is the framework and door itself....BUT only your Pandrino or suchlike (Godmother) is the one whom could, should, would lead the way in response to the question at hand about ObataLA .S SECRETOS....and recipies.
As an Cook im a bit of a stickler bout these things.
Wash It
Annoint it
Feed It
Read It ( see the Book i recommend...then it all will fall into place ,even when its in ;your face or nose or taste!!!)
Invoke IT!!!!!

Go over this with your Sponsors and Guarantors for your elevation and spiritual develpment accordingly to the ORalcles of Orisa/IFA!
Here's a good book list for all you book worms like "hecateshectichectors "here is.....the list...happy trails...

Blessed Be, and thanks for all these lessons!

Re: "nunca muerte" santeria medicinal plant identification?
Mon, July 7, 2008 - 1:24 PMWell, the plant i know from south america that is seen as a "never die" plant is the amaranthus, and this plant does exactly what you said. When it's dry and dead, you put it in water and then it becomes alive, and grows again. Even it's medicinal, and it's use for many diseases. Besides it's name is the same meaning, "amaranthus / never die". The common name for this plant is "Rosa de Jerico". I hope this can help you.
