I am wondering about something for a while. I have always wondered a few things about Orunmila, the orisha of the babalawos. I want to know if I would be out of line if I was to set up a shrine for him in my house. I mean I pray the the Seven African Powers, of which he is a member. I am not tring to work with the opele, or the Table of Ifa, Its just that I have been wondering if setting up an altar to him would be beneficial, and so my question is whether or not non-baba;awos can even pray and invoke hispatronage.
Any help would be very much obliged.

Re: Orunmila
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 10:26 AMAboru Aboye Abosise Iya. Orunmila who's real name is "Ela" is not a specific spirit soley for the Babalawo, though only Babalawo are able to see him and communicate with him. This is mostly because that is what Odu herself requested, but that is another subject. He is the son of Olodumare (God), he is the God of all wisdom. Everything living creature on earth and in the heavens (even the other Irunmole & Orisa) have to consult Ifa. If you have Ikofa, that is all you need to praise him. If not, there is nother you can set up that would mean anything to anybody but you. It is best to say Oriki in the mornings to him. Or, leave anything you wish with a Babalawo or his Ifa and pray to his Ifa. Orunmila hears all. You could also leave offerings for Orunmila to Esu/Elewa and ask him to deliver them along with your prays. -

When a woman takes the Ikofa (for men Mano) of Ifa you receive him and a reading of your life's path. It's a very beautiful ceremony done by the Babas. The reading will tell you many things(like what's good for you, bad for you and who your crown Orisha is).
I feel blessed that I was able to receive Orula and when my friends took the ceremony I was able to be there (at least for the non Baba parts).
May the Eggun bless you & guide you- -

Re: Orunmila
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 7:49 PMI wanted to add that when you find a Madrina/Padrino & Ile they can teach and guide you. Not all houses use Babas (no offense meant by this) but it is something I came across a few times. Having a Madrina/Padrino (or Iya/Baba) to learn from is something I can't stress enough. The sense of community and guidance is something you can't get online. I wish there was a way for me to explain/show what being in a good Ile is like to those that are reluctant to find Godparents.
My apologies for getting off track. -

Tue, May 13, 2008 - 10:59 PMthank you and i am actually in the process of looking for an ile, but alas, most are very far away....don't worry, i am not one of those wannabes whp discredits Ocha, you know the kind who pick up a book about Santeria, and chat with a santera online then proclaim themselves experts on the subject.
