I've seen many of people say that They have( chango and mother be oshun or oya) my question is who tell's these things. ( the way I was taught was that you won't find out who your other sibling is till you make Ocha or santo) for me I was told that chango, shango was my crowning orisha and it was not till I did My saint that I found out that yemeya was my mom. ) but I hear on tribe that ow I was told ow my orisha is chango and my mother is ochun. Now that is fine and dandy and all but in my house is that once you do your saint is when you find out who your other parent is. Please share I would love to hear( for example when I had readings done ochun used to speak alot for me. But in the end when I did do my saint or Ocha she was not my mother. Later to find out that she was the one who took care of me but yemeya was
My mother!!!!

    :) Jeremy -

I was speaking about this with an acquaintance the other day. I believe that it has become a common trend now a day's for people to either be misinformed, or through their own chain of thoughts, to misinform themselves.

The only way in Santeria to find out who your crowning Orisha is is through divination either with Ifa or the Diloggun of the godparent (different people have different beliefs, but it is either one of these ways). The balancing parent energy (male if your crown is female, and vice versa) is determined only after the ceremony of Kariosha is done, and at a certain point where other key information is determined.

Many people feel an affinity with one Orisha or another and may often feel that this energy will most definitely be their Crown or their balancing energy, but often; it is not.

Unfortunately, much of it boils down to simple dissemination of misinformation, or just innocent jumping the gun.

    Hi Jeremy,

I can honestly say I have absolutely no idea who my mother is..lol. I found out that Chango is my crowning Orisha when I did my Kofa which to me was a shock. I swore Ochun would claim my head..lol. Now that I've learned more about him though I can see it clear as day..lol I have connections with Yemaya (dont remember if it was my Ita or through divination but she asked me to go to the ocean 4 times a year with an offering) and Ochun is actually the one who told me I am to do Ocha and in my last divination she wanted me to get 5 gold bracelets. I have also been told I have Oya tendencies..lol. So for now I am just building relationships with each of them. I can not wait to find out who it is! But I know that whichever way it goes Ill be happy. I learned when I did my Kofa that you never know how it will turn out. Different Orisha come to defend you at different times in your life. I say build relationships with all of them. You cant go wrong!

THAT IS WHY I GIVE THANK'S EVERY DAY THAT I WAS DONE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT AND NOT IN THE NEW ONE , I REALLY FEEL SORRY FOR THIS PEOPLE THAT ARE NOW COMING IN THIS RELIGION AND THEY ARE BEING HAD , THE ONLY THING WE COULD DO IS PRAY TO OLOFIN AND OLODUMARE TO COME AND RECTIFIED THIS WORLD OF ALL THIS THING THAT ARE HAPPENING .

The reason for this post is althoe an orisha may be speaking threw a reading and all dose not mean you are a son or daughter of them..... Like I said before ochun used to come threw my readings but to find out later on yemeya was my mother put people in awwww. Although an orisha may speak tO you in readings( and let's say you are a child of obatala but oya speaks to you threw readings) you will not know for sure till you do your Ocha.I don't care what people tell you. You can be a son/ daughter of chango and althoe ochun speaks to alot threw readIngs does not mean ochun is your mother..... Iike I said before( ochun used to speak in my reading a whoooooole lot) but yemeya was my mom in Ocha. If you are new to this religion you need to learn that you won't find out who your second parent figure is till your ITA or when you do Ocha. That is truly when you find your paths... And your other parent who guides you.....

I've seen people get so upset when they discovered that the orisha to which they would be crowned wasn't the one they thought. Some folks believe they have an affinity and that's that, story over. They go and buy clothes of the colors of "their" orisha, decorate the house, act they way they think that orisha would dictate (yep, with all the excuses) and then are in for a shock when the Odu don't come they way they want!

@ sue yup. I've seen that as well. I knew a woman that swore up and down that she was a daughter of yemeya and she told me that if anyone told her any different she would go some where else. Cause she knew she was a daughter of yemeya. So I asked her is she ever had her saint brought down and she told me no. I didn't want to argue with her so I just let it go. Like I said before in previous post's everyone that I might be a omo of ochun, so it was a big surprise when they found out that I was omo of chango. So automatically the said well if ochuns not your crowing orisha then she must be your mom in Ocha. When I did my santo once agin everyone was in shock that yemeya was my mother. ( because ochun in every reading done was the one who spoke to me. But here's the twist ( yemeya was and is my mother in Ocha but ochun is the one who takes care of me and looks after me) so when I deeply need help I go to yemeya but mainly ochun fight's my battles for me. And the weirdest thing is I've always been close to both. The river's and ocean's. So for the people out there who are new to this walk of life that's when you truly find out who your other parent is. And your paths of the orisha's threw your odun's in Ocha. And those who don't know what odun's is (threw your sea shell) reading during your ITA which happen's on the third day you make your santo.

If you have been called by orunmila, it might just be that you are to be an Iyanifa. If you were told this by an Italero or someone who used the shells, then you should seek divination with an Awo (Babalawo) of Ifa.

May Ifa, and the orisa guide your path <3 Congrats!

Hello Rena, king is right. But I'd also like to add as well that orumila is not a crowning orisha in lucumi Santeria. Babalows work with him, and if he came up in a reading I would advise you to go see a babalow because you may need to receive something in IFA ( Mano de orula or warriors or cleansing, etc. But the babalow can find out who your guardian orisha is. :) I hope this helps?

Wow, I have never heard anyone tell me that they have... so-and-so and the mother be so-and-so unless they have ocha made. That is truly a strange phenomenon.

In my ilé, Padrino sometimes will give collares of your respresenting santo (I know most ilé's receive their collares to Obatala and all are considered Omo-Obatala until they get crowned). For example, Obara always came up in readings before I received my ilekes, and when I did a reading to being the process of receiving them, Chango spoke up first to give his blessing - so it was considered that I received my collares for Chango. My Madrina was the same story - only when she was to make Santo, Aggayu was the one to claim her crown, whereas, when I made santo, Chango spoke up again to claim my crown and only through Itá, did I find out that my mother was Oya.

I've known people to receive collares for Yemaya and eventually be made to Obatala (and maybe Yemaya is their mother)...

      :) Alyssa -

The correct way in the Lucumi tradition to receive Elekes is to undergo the intiation, where one receives the elekes of Eleggua, Obatala, Yemaya, Shango, and Oshun - this is pretty much the same way all Santeria/Lucumi eleke ceremonies are held.

Yes, Ged. As an 8 year old priestess if Shango, I've placed my share of elekes and understand that the 5 elekes received in that ceremony are those you mentioned... I was just commenting that in most ilés, pre-kariocha practitioners, aleyos, olorishas are all considered to be children of Obatala until they make Santo, and in my ilé, you receive elekes of/to your current representing guardian Orisha (which can change when the initiation process begins).

Ex. I was told I was receiving my (5) elekes for Shango..because he was representing me at the moment.

It was all a side note while I commented that people usually shouldn't know, or think they know, their secondary parent orishas until Itá.

As an aleyo, I can't say much of anything for certain, but I do know of an exception where an uninitiated person would find out their second parent before ocha. That's the case when someone is marked for an orisha that is crowned indirectly (con oro para) and the two orishas involved are of opposite genders, i.e. Erinle and Yemaya, or Orisha Oko and Yemaya or Oshun, depending on the house. When that's the case, they don't have to ask who the second parent is during Ita, because that orisha is already part of the crown. Then again, nothing is certain until the process has been completed. Again, just my limited understanding, but that is what i've been told by my elders.

Well, for me when I made Kofa I was told that Chango was my guardian angel. He is because despite learning from Yemanya during a mesa that Babalaye was my guardian angel, it is possible it seems that you can have more than one orisha who fights, takes care of, and loves you. I was crowned Babalaye to my head and it was a greate, greate priviledge. Because of generations of healty problems with my ancestors and parents, Baba had to step in to change the course of generational health. Chango loves me and I love him. He viciously take care of me. It is he who speaks to me during itas. Same for my mother. I always had a strong relationship with Oshun from the time I made Kofa. Yet, although Oshun is my mother, I also love Yemaye and she loves me. In an ita I was told that what ever I give or do with Oshun I must also do for Yemeya. I even had to switch the stones. I really believe that we must be greateful when we have more than one orisha who loves us and takes care of us. There is much too much nonsense going on in the world at this time. In fact we should respect all of the orisha in some way or the other because ultimately they come to our rescue when we have hard times.

@ aso hello:) how are you? So let me get this straight cause maybe I missed something ( so you found out in a misa who is supposed to be your crowning orisha? ) just a little unclear wasn't sure if that's what you meant or not or if I read it wrong? Never heard of anyone being told their crowning orisha in a spiritual mass before. Did you have it reconfirmed threw the diloggun ?

I am a little confused... so your head was marked Chango in your Kofa, but yet you crowned Babaluaye? Where was this done?
