Iyawo Soon

I will be crowned w/ Obatala in May. Any advice anyone can give me as to what to expect the first year or the days leading up to my ocha. Of course, without divulging any secrets.

Thanks!

Thanks for your advice. I am not new to the religion but really don't have much knowledge.

I can't wait until my ocha but am a little scared.

      thanks again.

Expect to be doing a lot of laundry.
Go over your list with your godparents of everything needed several times before the ceremony.
Do you have white slippers? cup, plate, bowl, and spoon?
Make sure you have something constructive to do with your time during your year.

Enjoy your initiation, mine was the most beautiful time of my entire life.
Once the ceremony starts just let go.

thanks for your help. I am not new to the religion since it saved my life at the age of 7, but I really don't have much knowledge thirty years later. I hope to one day be as knowledgeable as everyone on this site.

Anything you can share about the hijos of Baba?

      Thanks.

Your mat/estera is your friend! You'll spend a lot of time there and it will be your safety zone, even after your year is over. Head there if you feel overwhelmed.
Enjoy your year! It can be a happy time and you'll get treated really special, so try to get out to a few events with your godparents. It's important that people see you when you are a iyawo becuae it confirms your initiation and more importantly, your family relationships in the community.
It is also a very difficult time for some people. See #1!
Oh, and Oxi-clean, not bleach. Much easier on the fabric and the environment.
The days before might be hectic with being anxious and running around buying stuff you forgot, so try to be organized, BREATHE and ask questions, like, is this all I will need?

I vote for SHOUT! I din't try Oxyclean. But yeah regular bleach is a no no.

As for what Obatala's kids are like, don't worry about it. Just worry about what you are like.

      Also:

LISTEN TO YOUR ITA! It is your own personal bible. Live it. It is the most important thing. If you don't listen to your ita, then making ocha was totally in vain. Ita ita ita.

I'm not crowned yet but here's what I've learned so far:

Listen to your Madrina and Padrino or Babalawo, Pay attention to your Ita, watch/learn and go to as many events/ceremonies as possible. It's a very special time and it's such a blessing for you and others.

        Congratulations!!!
